FIELD NOTE / 01
How to produce product content in China without shipping samples overseas
A practical framework for deciding when local production can reduce shipping, delay and creative waste.
For many ecommerce brands, the first instinct is to ship every final sample to the market where the marketing team is based. That can be the right choice when the creative requires a specific talent network, location or tightly controlled brand set. It is not automatically the most efficient choice.
When products are manufactured in China, a local content workflow can remove an entire international shipping loop. The opportunity is not simply lower postage. It is earlier access to samples, easier factory coordination and the ability to capture production detail that would otherwise disappear once the product leaves the line.
Start with usage, not the shot list
Before deciding where to shoot, document the actual destinations for the work:
- Product detail pages and marketplaces
- Paid social and short-form channels
- Wholesale or retail presentations
- Launch email and organic social
- Factory, process or sourcing stories
A request for “ten photos and three videos” is not yet a useful production brief. Image ratios, safe areas, duration, text overlays, usage periods and regional rights change what should be captured.
Decide whether the sample can stay near the source
Local production is strongest when the sample is already in China, the product is difficult or expensive to ship internationally, or factory access adds useful proof. It can also help when a brand needs variations before final mass production is complete.
It may be the wrong choice when the concept depends on a specific overseas location, recognizable local talent, regulated claims or a creative team that must work physically together.
Build one review system
Distance is manageable when review criteria are explicit. Agree on:
- Reference frames and prohibited visual treatments
- Required features and product accuracy checks
- File naming, crops and export specifications
- The number of review rounds
- Who has final approval
The aim is not to replace the brand team. It is to make the production window more useful to them.
Treat rights and logistics as part of production
Clarify responsibility for sample receipt, storage, return shipping, damage, travel, talent, music, fonts and location permissions before capture begins. These details should live in the scope, not in a message thread after the shoot.
Producing content in China works best as an operational decision: use proximity to reduce unnecessary movement, then use a precise brief to protect the brand across distance.
